After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Vikings committed. J.J. McCarthy is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline.
The Wilson pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. Leaving running back unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the running back spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 11 they get a bendy edge with upside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In the 23rd pick they get the arm they will build around at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
A tidy little value on Zak Zinter in the 108th overall pick, a step better than break-even. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Theo Johnson in No. 129 lands just on the right side of the ledger. The roster fit checks out.
Johnny Wilson in slot 157 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A reach for Ty'Ron Hopper in pick No. 167; a little patience would have been rewarded. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Tanor Bortolini in pick 177 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
JD Bertrand is a better player than the Round 7 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Dominique Hampton. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
