The Vikings did not so much draft Joe Milton III as overpay for him, 33 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through safety. The roster is better shaped than it was, with quarterback chief among the fixes. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 11th overall pick they get a problem off the edge. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In the Round 1 slot they get a premier pass rusher at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Cedric Gray. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Good price on Johnny Wilson in No. 129, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The roster fit checks out.
Dillon Johnson at Round 5, Pick 21 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A real head-scratcher, Joe Milton III in pick 167 is miles ahead of his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A premium they did not need to pay, Trente Jones a notch or two before his time. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A straight-up fair deal on Trevin Wallace at Round 7, Pick 10, value and slot in agreement. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
No edge and no loss on Andrew Raym in the Round 7 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
