Houston Texans

The Texans went off-script early, and it cost them a F.

The Texans clearly saw something nobody else did in Oronde Gadsden II, taking him 49 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced. About as rough as the board gets, and a F to prove it.

The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. That Pearsall pick is the receipt they will wave around later. The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.

Bottom line, it will take a lot of luck to make this look better later.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.28 · Pick 28 · Rome Odunze · WR · rank 13
In the Round 1 slot they get a go-to option on the outside, and a steal at that. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R1.29 · Pick 29 · Chop Robinson · DE-EDGE · rank 14
In No. 29 they get a premier pass rusher at a price that makes it sweeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R1.30 · Pick 30 · JC Latham · OT · rank 17
Value with a capital V on JC Latham in pick 30, a genuine coup. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R1.31 · Pick 31 · Dallas Turner · LB-EDGE · rank 22
In pick No. 31 they get a disruptor off the edge, outstanding value to boot. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.17 · Pick 49 · Trey Benson · RB · rank 65
Trey Benson in slot 49 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R2.29 · Pick 61 · Leonard Taylor III · DL · rank 68
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Leonard Taylor III. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R4.17 · Pick 117 · Jaden Hicks · S · rank 126
They went early on Jaden Hicks in the Round 4 slot, and the value did not follow. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R4.28 · Pick 128 · Payton Wilson · LB · rank 144
Payton Wilson at Round 4, Pick 28 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R5.18 · Pick 154 · Oronde Gadsden II · TE · rank 203
They talked themselves into Oronde Gadsden II at slot 154, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R7.14 · Pick 234 · Ricky Pearsall · WR · rank 201
Taking Ricky Pearsall in the 234th pick is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R7.18 · Pick 238 · Sam Hartman · QB · rank 261
Sam Hartman at No. 238 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
