The phones were a trap the Texans kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal.
The Watson reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Landing Hart that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, interior defensive lineman very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 26 they get a home-run threat at receiver at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In slot 27 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare, outstanding value to boot. The biggest hole, addressed.
In the 28th overall pick they get a double-digit-sack hope, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In pick No. 29 they get a disruptor off the edge at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Beau Brade at the Round 4 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the safety. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Cam Hart at the 126th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Nice patience on Isaiah Adams, who had no business lasting to No. 154. The roster fit checks out.
They reached a country mile for Blake Watson at pick 234, and the board is aghast. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Sam Hartman well ahead of where he belonged. It fills a real need, too.
