Minnesota Vikings

The Vikings drew a line under the quarterback search with McCarthy: B+.

Start where it matters. The Vikings took J.J. McCarthy to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B+.

The Jones pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class.

Leaving safety unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. If Eichenberg pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.

Good work on the whole, with safety the one box left unchecked.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.11 · Pick 11 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 23
In the Round 1 slot they get their guy under center for the next decade, reach and all. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R2.3 · Pick 35 · Tyler Guyton · OT · rank 29
Fair-plus on Tyler Guyton, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R4.4 · Pick 104 · Gabriel Murphy · DL-EDGE · rank 92
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Gabriel Murphy in pick No. 104. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R4.8 · Pick 108 · DeWayne Carter · DT · rank 101
DeWayne Carter at the 108th overall pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R4.29 · Pick 129 · Tommy Eichenberg · LB · rank 145
A reach on Tommy Eichenberg in Round 4, Pick 29; the board had better options right there. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R5.21 · Pick 157 · Ainias Smith · WR · rank 141
They read the board right and Ainias Smith was the payoff at slot 157. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R5.31 · Pick 167 · Christian Jones · OT · rank 133
The board fumbled Christian Jones all the way to pick 167, and they scooped it up. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R6.2 · Pick 177 · Dwight McGlothern · CB · rank 161
They let Dwight McGlothern come to them and pounced at No. 177. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R7.10 · Pick 230 · Garret Greenfield · OT · rank 216
The board had Garret Greenfield higher than Round 7, Pick 10, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R7.12 · Pick 232 · Tatum Bethune · LB · rank 229
A tidy little value on Tatum Bethune in pick 232, a step better than break-even. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
