After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Vikings committed. J.J. McCarthy is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B+.
The Gould pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
The cost of the Proctor reach is exactly the players who went right after him.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 19th overall pick they get a franchise quarterback at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Caelen Carson slid further than he should have, and pick No. 108 is lovely value for the cornerback. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Value with a capital V on Matt Goncalves in the 129th pick, a genuine coup. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They will replay Jarrian Jones at No. 157 for years; that is how good the value is. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Layden Robinson at pick 167 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
The board fumbled Anthony Gould all the way to the Round 6 slot, and they scooped it up. It fills a real need, too.
The board had Steele Chambers higher than slot 209, and the linebacker fell to them anyway. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Evan Williams slipping to Round 7, Pick 10 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Josh Proctor in the 232nd overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
