Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Eagles spent Round 4, Pick 13 on Dominique Hampton, a name most had 121 spots down the list. The warnings were there, and the F is the bill.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. The Wilson pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want.
The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
In the end, a class that has to defy its grades just to matter.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 15th overall pick they get an island corner. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In No. 17 they get a ballhawk on the outside at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Edgerrin Cooper at pick 33 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A surprising call. With edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots still to address, they spent Round 2, Pick 7 on Payton Wilson, a linebacker they were not short of.
James Williams at slot 111 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A need, and now a little less of one.
A real head-scratcher, Dominique Hampton in the Round 4 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They let Luke McCaffrey come to them and pounced at No. 161. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Joe Milton III at the 172nd pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They talked themselves into Frank Crum at pick 210, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
