The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Eagles watched Patrick Paul slide 89 picks past his grade and did not hesitate.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. The roster is better shaped than it was, with cornerback chief among the fixes.
The verdict is a shrug for now, with the swing picks left to write the real ending.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 18th pick they get a difference-maker at receiver at a price that makes it sweeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Cooper DeJean at Round 2, Pick 18 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Taking Rome Odunze in the 55th overall pick is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in pick No. 56 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Patrick Paul at the Round 5 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It fills a real need, too.
They paid sticker price for Kamal Hadden in No. 138, and that is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They read the board right and Cody Schrader was the payoff at pick 178. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
No edge and no loss on Dylan McMahon in slot 243; it is a wash and a sensible one. The roster fit checks out.
