The Raiders bet big and early on David Ugwoegbu, 43 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. They banked enough surplus on DeJean to cover a lot of smaller sins.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 27 they get a potential shutdown corner, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They paid sticker price for Tyler Guyton in the 35th pick, and that is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Devontez Walker at Round 2, Pick 12 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Braden Fiske in pick No. 77 is fair value, right on his grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Marist Liufau at the Round 3 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They paid up for MarShawn Lloyd at slot 113 when waiting would have done the job. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A premium they did not need to pay, Jaylen Wright a notch or two before his time. A need, and now a little less of one.
This one needs a full-page explanation: David Ugwoegbu in pick 190, miles early. It fits a board better than it fits this team.
