Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Cam Skattebo got past him. The Raiders do not have to explain a thing at Round 6, Pick 37. For now it grades a C-, with the swing picks left to settle the rest.
The Dart pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Not a disaster, not a triumph, just a middling class.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 6 they get a difference-maker at receiver. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A running back of that caliber at the 37th pick is the definition of value, full stop. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Kenneth Grant is a better player than pick No. 39 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Jaxson Dart at Round 3, Pick 8 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They will replay Demetrius Knight Jr. at the 106th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Jay Higgins at the Round 5 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Smael Mondon Jr. in No. 178, plain and simple. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
They robbed the room for Cam Skattebo here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It fills a real need, too.
Jordan Hancock at the 216th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They took Roc Taylor at par in pick No. 222, which is nothing to complain about. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
