The Vikings spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Cam Skattebo, the No. 105 name on the board, in pick 221.
The Jefferson pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher.
The Vikings paired the rookies with proven help, Trent McDuffie leading the way.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Kenneth Grant at the 34th pick is the proof. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
The board fumbled Kaleb Johnson all the way to pick 65, and they scooped it up. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Tate Ratledge at No. 93 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They barely believed it either: TreVeyon Henderson still on the board at slot 95. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Taking Andrew Mukuba in Round 3, Pick 33 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Barrett Carter in pick No. 129 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Jake Majors at the 132nd overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Tory Horton in the Round 4 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It fills a real need, too.
They will replay Mason Taylor at pick No. 140 for years; that is how good the value is. The roster fit checks out.
A running back of that caliber at pick 162 is the definition of value, full stop. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Circle this one: Danny Stutsman at Round 5, Pick 28 is a fall that decides a draft. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
They paid sticker price for Jacob Parrish in the Round 6 slot, and that is fine. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
DJ Campbell in the 219th overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Cam Skattebo at No. 221 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A big swing on Kai Kroeger at slot 231, well ahead of any board in the building. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Value said wait; Thor Griffith in the 243rd pick says they were not listening. A need, and now a little less of one.
They robbed the room for Akili Arnold here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
This one needs a full-page explanation: KJ Jefferson in slot 248, miles early. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Jamon Dumas-Johnson in Round 7, Pick 38, plain and simple. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
