Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Raiders spent the 77th pick on Spencer Rattler, a name most had 41 spots down the list. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
That Devonshire pick is the receipt they will wave around later. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.
Job largely done: cornerback settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 13 they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Payton Wilson at pick No. 44 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Spencer Rattler at No. 77 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Mason McCormick at the Round 4 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They went early on Dylan Laube in the 148th overall pick, and the value did not follow. A need, and now a little less of one.
They paid up for Garret Greenfield at pick 208 when waiting would have done the job. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Bub Means in pick No. 223 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Circle this one: M.J. Devonshire at the 229th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
