Nobody had Brevyn Spann-Ford this high, and it is not close. The Vikings reached 32 spots to get him at pick 232.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. They have staked the next five years on Michael Penix Jr., which is the only story that really matters here.
Landing Foster that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. On the needs board they went 8 of 8, with quarterback the one that mattered most.
Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 11 they get a difference-maker at receiver. A real need, handled.
In pick No. 12 they get a long-term answer under center at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In No. 23 they get a go-to option on the outside, even if it was a touch early. A clean fit for the roster.
Austin Booker at pick 76 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Zak Zinter in the 108th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Cedric Gray at the Round 4 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They paid sticker price for Bucky Irving in the 129th pick, and that is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Myles Cole well ahead of where he belonged. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Javon Foster in the Round 5 slot. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A straight-up fair deal on Tykee Smith at Round 5, Pick 11, value and slot in agreement. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Good price on Luke McCaffrey in pick 157, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They reached a country mile for Delmar Glaze at slot 167, and the board is aghast. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A tidy little value on Jordan Jefferson in the 177th overall pick, a step better than break-even. The roster fit checks out.
Joe Milton III in pick No. 203 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
JD Bertrand at Round 7, Pick 10 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Brevyn Spann-Ford in pick No. 232 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
