The phones were a trap the Vikings kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal.
So much rides on J.J. McCarthy that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want.
They will need Robinson to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Simpson falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 4 they get a matchup problem out wide. A clean fit for the roster.
In Round 1, Pick 11 they get a passer to set the clock by, though they paid up to get him. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In the Round 1 slot they get a No. 1 receiver at fair value. A real need, handled.
They reached a country mile for Beaux Limmer at the 108th pick, and the board is aghast. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A straight-up fair deal on Ben Sinnott at slot 129, value and slot in agreement. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They took Trevor Keegan at par in the 138th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A real head-scratcher, Layden Robinson in pick 157 is miles ahead of his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They will replay Jaylin Simpson at No. 167 for years; that is how good the value is. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Circle this one: Sione Vaki at the 177th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Nathaniel Watson at pick No. 230 is the proof. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Jaylan Ford at slot 232 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
