You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Raiders did exactly that with Prince Pines in the 251st pick. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
Landing Williams that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. Cornerback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Brandon Allen gives the group a proven body among the projects.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 13 they get an island corner at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Circle this one: Tyler Guyton at slot 54 is a fall that decides a draft. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
No drama and no debate, Max Melton went about where he belonged in pick No. 77. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They talked themselves into Michael Pratt at the 112th pick, and the board did not agree. A need, and now a little less of one.
Taking Isaac Guerendo in Round 5, Pick 12 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A wild overpay on Fabien Lovett in the 156th overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They reached into another round for Richard Jibunor, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It does not line up with the team's obvious holes.
They read the board right and Curtis Jacobs was the payoff at the Round 6 slot. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They robbed the room for Isaiah Williams here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Matthew Jones well ahead of where he belonged. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Value said wait; Brevyn Spann-Ford in slot 229 says they were not listening. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Prince Pines this early at No. 251. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
