Arizona Cardinals

A costly weekend of dealing drags the Cardinals to a C+.

Nobody had Desmond Evans this high, and it is not close. The Cardinals reached 36 spots to get him at the Round 7 slot.

Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback. It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.

Bottom line, the swing picks will decide whether this ages well.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.10 · Pick 10 · Malik Nabers · WR · rank 4
In the 10th overall pick they get a weapon on the perimeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
R3.2 · Pick 66 · Christian Haynes · OG · rank 79
Christian Haynes in the Round 3 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R3.7 · Pick 71 · Mekhi Wingo · DT · rank 75
Mekhi Wingo at Round 3, Pick 7 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R3.8 · Pick 72 · Zak Zinter · OG · rank 94
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Zak Zinter well ahead of where he belonged. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R3.12 · Pick 76 · McKinnley Jackson · DL · rank 96
A big swing on McKinnley Jackson at slot 76, well ahead of any board in the building. A need, and now a little less of one.
R3.26 · Pick 89 · Tommy Eichenberg · LB · rank 109
Tommy Eichenberg at the 89th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R4.33 · Pick 133 · Javon Foster · OT · rank 132
No drama and no debate, Javon Foster went about where he belonged in pick 133. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R5.1 · Pick 137 · Sincere Haynesworth · C · rank 152
Sincere Haynesworth in the 137th overall pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R5.4 · Pick 140 · Ben Sinnott · TE · rank 157
They jumped the gun on Ben Sinnott, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It fills a real need, too.
R5.23 · Pick 159 · Austin Stogner · TE · rank 189
They left a pile of value on the table to take Austin Stogner this early at slot 159. The roster fit checks out.
R6.20 · Pick 195 · Xavier Thomas · DE-EDGE · rank 211
A reach on Xavier Thomas in the 195th pick; the board had better options right there. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R7.5 · Pick 225 · Fentrell Cypress II · CB · rank 230
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Fentrell Cypress II. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R7.7 · Pick 227 · Ja'Had Carter · S · rank 240
A reach for Ja'Had Carter in the Round 7 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R7.13 · Pick 233 · Donovan Jennings · OT · rank 244
Donovan Jennings at pick No. 233 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R7.17 · Pick 237 · Desmond Evans · DL-EDGE · rank 273
This one needs a full-page explanation: Desmond Evans in pick 237, miles early. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
