The Texans treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending Round 7, Pick 27 on Julius Welschof a full 82 spots early. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. The Watson steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 23 they get a lockdown presence outside. Need was not the driver here.
In slot 24 they get a matchup problem out wide at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They paid sticker price for Chop Robinson in the 33rd pick, and that is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
No edge and no loss on Edgerrin Cooper in Round 2, Pick 26; it is a wash and a sensible one. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A quiet steal in the 90th overall pick: Johnny Wilson for less than the market said. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Sataoa Laumea at pick 123 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Malik Mustapha at the Round 4 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
De'Corian Clark at pick 163 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Blake Watson in Round 7, Pick 19, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A big swing on Julius Welschof at pick No. 247, well ahead of any board in the building. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
