The Texans treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending No. 247 on Julius Welschof a full 82 spots early. Too much went sideways, and the D is the honest tally.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. The Abrams-Draine pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at offensive lineman and quarterback. For all the activity, offensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 23 they get a sticky cover corner. More want than need.
In No. 24 they get a No. 1 receiver at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A straight-up fair deal on Chop Robinson at the Round 2 slot, value and slot in agreement. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
The board had cheaper options than Payton Wilson at the 58th overall pick, and it noticed. It fills a real need, too.
A big swing on Leonard Taylor III at slot 90, well ahead of any board in the building. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A surprising call. With offensive lineman and quarterback still to address, they spent Round 4, Pick 23 on Kris Abrams-Draine, a cornerback they were not short of.
Malik Mustapha at the 126th pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They reached a country mile for Jared Wiley at the 163rd overall pick, and the board is aghast. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They paid a round early for Carson Steele in No. 239, more than the board wanted. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
