The phones sank the Texans this weekend: D.

Future D-

The Texans treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending No. 247 on Julius Welschof a full 82 spots early. Too much went sideways, and the D is the honest tally.

They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. The Abrams-Draine pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at offensive lineman and quarterback. For all the activity, offensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain.

Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.

A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.23 · Pick 23 · Kool-Aid McKinstry · CB · rank 19
In pick 23 they get a sticky cover corner. More want than need.
R1.24 · Pick 24 · Troy Franklin · WR · rank 26
In No. 24 they get a No. 1 receiver at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R2.1 · Pick 33 · Chop Robinson · DE-EDGE · rank 39
A straight-up fair deal on Chop Robinson at the Round 2 slot, value and slot in agreement. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R2.26 · Pick 58 · Payton Wilson · LB · rank 70
The board had cheaper options than Payton Wilson at the 58th overall pick, and it noticed. It fills a real need, too.
R3.27 · Pick 90 · Leonard Taylor III · DL · rank 112
A big swing on Leonard Taylor III at slot 90, well ahead of any board in the building. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R4.23 · Pick 123 · Kris Abrams-Draine · CB · rank 118
A surprising call. With offensive lineman and quarterback still to address, they spent Round 4, Pick 23 on Kris Abrams-Draine, a cornerback they were not short of.
R4.26 · Pick 126 · Malik Mustapha · S · rank 136
Malik Mustapha at the 126th pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R5.27 · Pick 163 · Jared Wiley · TE · rank 196
They reached a country mile for Jared Wiley at the 163rd overall pick, and the board is aghast. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R7.19 · Pick 239 · Carson Steele · RB · rank 250
They paid a round early for Carson Steele in No. 239, more than the board wanted. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R7.27 · Pick 247 · Julius Welschof · DL-EDGE · rank 329
This one needs a full-page explanation: Julius Welschof in Round 7, Pick 27, miles early. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
