Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Texans spent Round 7, Pick 28 on Julius Welschof, a name most had 81 spots down the list. The process wobbled, and the D is where it lands.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. That offensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring. The Benson pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and offensive lineman is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 23rd overall pick they get a home-run threat at receiver, outstanding value to boot. The biggest hole, addressed.
In pick No. 24 they get a lockdown presence outside at fair value. More want than need.
T'Vondre Sweat in pick 33 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Edgerrin Cooper in the 59th pick is fair value, right on his grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Value with a capital V on Trey Benson in the Round 3 slot, a genuine coup. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A reach for Malik Mustapha in Round 4, Pick 23; a little patience would have been rewarded. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Jaheim Bell in No. 127 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
This one needs a full-page explanation: David Ugwoegbu in slot 164, miles early. It does not line up with the team's obvious holes.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Tanner McLachlan. The roster fit checks out.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Julius Welschof well ahead of where he belonged. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
