The Vikings put a flag in the ground for Joe Milton III, 33 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B+.
With tight end unsolved, spending premium capital on DT-EDGE is the choice that costs them. The tight end spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
The Williams pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. DeShon Elliott gives the group a proven body among the projects.
Good work on the whole, with tight end the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
They took J.J. McCarthy at par in Round 2, Pick 10, which is nothing to complain about. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
T.J. Tampa at slot 55 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Ruke Orhorhoro in the Round 2 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
No edge and no loss on Xavier Legette in pick 76; it is a wash and a sensible one. The roster fit checks out.
A curious use of the 109th pick. Tight end needed the pick; a DT-EDGE in Maason Smith did not.
Mohamed Kamara in pick No. 130 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A quiet steal in the 131st pick: James Williams for less than the market said. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A tidy bit of business in slot 144, where Jaylin Simpson graded well above the range. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Kitan Oladapo at the 156th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A wild overpay on Joe Milton III in pick 166, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Khristian Boyd at No. 179 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A straight-up fair deal on Jaylan Ford at the Round 6 slot, value and slot in agreement. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A big swing on Garret Greenfield at Round 6, Pick 21, well ahead of any board in the building. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Kendall Milton in pick No. 200. A need, and now a little less of one.
