The value of the weekend has a name and a slot: Jacob Cowing, the 241st overall pick, roughly 50 picks past where he belonged. The bottom line is a respectable B.

Every board in the league had Mitchell lower, and that gap is the story. For all the activity, safety went untouched, which is hard to explain. They left with quarterback solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.

In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.22 · Pick 22 · Jer'Zhan Newton · DL · rank 18
In the Round 1 slot they get an anchor for the defensive front. A real need, handled.
R2.1 · Pick 33 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 42
J.J. McCarthy at the 33rd overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R3.23 · Pick 86 · TreVeyon Henderson · RB · rank 89
They paid sticker price for TreVeyon Henderson in pick 86, and that is fine. A need, and now a little less of one.
R4.22 · Pick 122 · Nehemiah Pritchett · CB · rank 127
Nehemiah Pritchett in Round 4, Pick 22 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R5.2 · Pick 138 · Cedric Gray · LB · rank 146
A reach on Cedric Gray in No. 138; the board had better options right there. A minor itch, scratched.
R5.21 · Pick 157 · Zion Tupuola-Fetui · DE-EDGE · rank 170
Zion Tupuola-Fetui at pick No. 157 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R5.25 · Pick 161 · Tyler Guyton · OT · rank 142
Tyler Guyton at the 161st pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R5.32 · Pick 168 · Bryce Foster · C · rank 186
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Bryce Foster. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R6.4 · Pick 179 · Kamal Hadden · CB · rank 175
Kamal Hadden at the 179th pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
R6.25 · Pick 200 · Ainias Smith · WR · rank 174
They will replay Ainias Smith at the 200th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. It fills a real need, too.
R7.21 · Pick 241 · Jacob Cowing · WR · rank 191
The board fumbled Jacob Cowing all the way to slot 241, and they scooped it up. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R7.23 · Pick 243 · Jackson Mitchell · LB · rank 271
A real head-scratcher, Jackson Mitchell in No. 243 is miles ahead of his ranking. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
