Nobody had Malik Mustapha this high, and it is not close. The Texans reached 28 spots to get him at the Round 4 slot.
That is a quarterback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it.
A perfectly average weekend, for better and for worse.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 23 they get a blindside protector. A clean fit for the roster.
In slot 30 they get a premier pass rusher at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A premium they did not need to pay, Byron Murphy II a notch or two before his time. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Edgerrin Cooper in pick 62 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The roster fit checks out.
Malachi Corley in the 90th pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Khyree Jackson at No. 123 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Malik Mustapha in pick No. 126, miles early. A minor itch, scratched.
They reached into another round for Zion Tupuola-Fetui, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A real head-scratcher, De'Corian Clark in the 167th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Blake Watson at slot 239 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Phil Jurkovec in No. 247 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A need, and now a little less of one.
