The tape said wait; the Texans did not. Julius Welschof went at the Round 7 slot, a good 82 picks before the board was ready.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took McKinstry. The roster is better shaped than it was, with running back chief among the fixes.
Not a disaster, not a triumph, just a middling class.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a home-run threat at receiver at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Kool-Aid McKinstry slipping to pick 33 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A minor itch, scratched.
No edge and no loss on Edgerrin Cooper in Round 2, Pick 26; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Marist Liufau in pick No. 90 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.

They left a pile of value on the table to take Jared Wiley this early at the Round 5 slot. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
The board had cheaper options than Carson Steele at pick No. 239, and it noticed. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Julius Welschof at the 247th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
