Nobody else had Frank Gore Jr. anywhere near pick 179. The Vikings did, by 76 spots, and that gap is the whole story. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Roberts. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
They paid sticker price for Bralen Trice in the Round 1 slot, and that is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They paid a round early for Cooper DeJean in the 44th overall pick, more than the board wanted. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Justin Rogers at the 112th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It fills a real need, too.
Brenden Rice at pick No. 127 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Jaheim Bell in Round 5, Pick 13 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Jack Nelson at No. 162 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Jaylan Ford at the Round 5 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A wild overpay on Frank Gore Jr. in the 179th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Somehow Willie Roberts was still sitting there in pick 233, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
