The search is over. The Vikings handed the keys to J.J. McCarthy, and the whole operation now runs on his development. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
They are betting Greenfield proves the room right and everyone else wrong. The Johnson pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
Leaving safety unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. They left with quarterback solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the safety spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 11th pick they get their quarterback of the future, though the board says they badly overpaid. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In slot 23 they get a load in the middle. A clean fit for the roster.
Zak Zinter at pick No. 108 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Circle this one: Leonard Taylor III at pick 129 is a fall that decides a draft. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They reached into another round for Khristian Boyd, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Garret Greenfield at Round 5, Pick 31 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Nehemiah Pritchett in No. 177 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They reached a country mile for Brevyn Spann-Ford at the Round 7 slot, and the board is aghast. The roster fit checks out.
They barely believed it either: Cornelius Johnson still on the board at slot 232. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
