After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Vikings committed. J.J. McCarthy is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B+.
The McGlothern value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. Spann-Ford has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck.
The safety hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 17 they get the face of the franchise, even if it was a touch early. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In the Round 1 slot they get a bendy edge with upside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Steal is underselling it; Brian Thomas Jr. at pick 48 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A need, and now a little less of one.
The board had Kingsley Suamataia higher than the 87th overall pick, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Christian Mahogany is a better player than Round 4, Pick 8 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Leonard Taylor III at pick No. 129 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It fills a real need, too.
Marist Liufau in the 157th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A reach for Ty'Ron Hopper in slot 167; a little patience would have been rewarded. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
The board fumbled Christian Jones all the way to slot 177, and they scooped it up. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Value said wait; Brevyn Spann-Ford in the 216th overall pick says they were not listening. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Dwight McGlothern at No. 230 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A big swing on Sam Hartman at the 232nd pick, well ahead of any board in the building. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They will replay Jalen Coker at pick 244 for years; that is how good the value is. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
