When the story of this class is written, it opens with Carson Steele at pick No. 158, a reach of 77 spots that the board flatly disagrees with. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
However the rest shakes out, Smith at that price is a win they earned. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
The DeJean pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with edge rusher, quarterback and other spots still on the board.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 24 they get a go-to option on the outside. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A surprising call. With edge rusher, quarterback and other spots still to address, they spent pick No. 53 on Cooper DeJean, a defensive back they were not short of.
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tyler Davis. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went defensive back with Mike Sainristil while clear needs at edge rusher, quarterback and other spots sat open.
Good price on Troy Fautanu in slot 124, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Value said wait; Carson Steele in pick 158 says they were not listening. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Ainias Smith in the 240th overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Stefon Thompson in pick No. 242 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The roster reasoning here is anyone's guess.
