Draft Profile: Bio
A powerful one-cut runner out of Penn State, Kaytron Allen emerged as a key offensive weapon for the Nittany Lions over the past two seasons. The 5'11", 229-pound back from Norfolk, Virginia arrived in Happy Valley as a highly-touted 4-star recruit out of IMG Academy. Allen made an immediate impact as a freshman in 2022, rushing for 867 yards and 10 touchdowns while splitting carries with fellow freshman Nicholas Singleton.Allen built on his strong debut with an impressive sophomore campaign in 2023, earning second-team All-Big Ten honors after rushing for 902 yards and 6 touchdowns. He finished his Penn State career with 1,769 rushing yards, good for 21st all-time in program history. Allen's bruising running style and nose for the end zone helped him rack up 16 rushing touchdowns over two seasons, including a three-score performance against Indiana as a freshman that tied a Penn State freshman record.
Though he shared the backfield throughout his college career, Allen proved to be a consistent and productive runner when given opportunities. He posted four 100-yard rushing games at Penn State, including a career-high 137 yards against Michigan State in 2023. Allen's combination of power and vision allowed him to average over 5 yards per carry in both of his collegiate seasons.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- Downhill, one-cut runner who attacks the line of scrimmage with authority and decisiveness
- Powerful lower body allows him to run through arm tackles and pick up yards after contact consistently
- Displays good vision to find and exploit running lanes, particularly in zone blocking schemes
- Runs with excellent pad level and leverage, making him difficult to bring down on initial contact
- Demonstrates solid ball security, keeping the ball high and tight to his body in traffic
- Shows good burst through the hole and acceleration to the second level of the defense
- Effective short-yardage and goal-line back due to his size and power
- Has experience and success operating in a committee backfield, which could ease NFL transition
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Lacks elite long speed to consistently break off long runs at the NFL level
- Limited experience and production as a receiver out of the backfield
- Pass protection skills need refinement; struggles at times to identify and engage blitzers
- Lateral agility is average, limiting his ability to make defenders miss in space
- May need to improve stamina and conditioning for a full NFL workload
Scouting Report: Summary
Allen fits the role of a scheme-specific contributor at the next level, best suited for a downhill, power-running game. His one-cut style and physicality make him an ideal fit for teams employing zone-blocking schemes. While he may not possess the versatility to be an every-down back immediately, Allen's power and vision should allow him to carve out a role in short-yardage and goal-line situations early in his career. His experience sharing carries in college could be beneficial as he transitions to the NFL, where committee backfields are increasingly common. Allen's limited production in the passing game may restrict his third-down usage initially, but his willingness to improve in this area could expand his role over time.
Teams looking for a physical, north-south runner to complement a more elusive back will find Allen an intriguing mid-round option. His combination of size, power, and collegiate production suggests he has the potential to develop into a reliable rotational back with the upside to handle a larger workload if needed.
