Rookie Radar Could Play a Large Role in Determining Who the Next NFL Superstar is
257 college football players have now officially become NFL rookies, having been drafted into their respective teams.
Some will go on to have exceptional rookie seasons. Some will be stars of the future. Some will likely become bit part players, making occasional appearances off the bench, and some may never step foot on the pitch for their new teams.
Although it’s difficult to accurately predict which players will be successes and which won’t, that’s not only the job of coaches across the country, but also commentators, fantasy football managers, and sports fans.
The Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs, who competed in the last Super Bowl final, are the joint favourites to lift the Vince Lombardi Trophy again. The two rivals have been given odds of +600, with the Baltimore Ravens just behind them in the betting at +650. Punters can get better odds, and potentially enjoy generous offers, by shopping around at sites including those listed and rated by PokerStrategy. According to online betting expert Toby Tustin-Durant, NFL is one of the most popular sports betting markets, meaning fans have a lot of options.
The Rookie Radar
The rookie radar is really a list of the players that were picked during the last draft, with particular onus placed on those who are most likely to make an immediate impact. According to analysts and experts, there are several names that really stand out among this year’s picks.
Despite being the 24th pick, Donovan Jackson was the third guard chosen. The Minnesota Vikings have got a player widely considered to be pro-ready. He can play as a pass protector and and a run blocker and is likely to line up alongside Christian Darrisaw and Ryan Kelly. Jackson played more than 800 snaps in three consecutive seasons and slotted in neatly as left time tackle after an injury to Josh Simmons.
Ashton Jeanty is likely to have a major impact this season. Not only does he have all the qualities of a pro player but he also fills the need of the new coaching pairing of Pete Carroll and Chip Kelly. The Las Vegas Raiders want to play a powerful running game and Jeanty, as Running Back, ticks all the right boxes. Las Vegas looks to have a very solid blocking unit, which will give Jeanty the chance to shine.
The Jacksonville Jaguars traded up from number 5 pick to number 2 on the Thursday and they used the opportunity to grab Travis Hunter. The Jaguars obviously put a lot of stock in the rookie as they ditched number 5, 36, and 126 picks, taking numbers 2, 104, and 200, in return. With that said, most draft boards had Hunter placed 1st or 2nd and he is widely expected to go on and become a starring player this year. The aggressive play will make the Jaguars stronger and benefit the player.
Receiver Tetairoa McMillan was the number 8 pick, which surprised a few commentators, as he was expected to come a little further down the pecking order. However, he is a 6-foot-4, 219 pound athlete who does especially well in contested catches. He will partner well with Bryce Young and McMillan is likely to develop well under the stewardship of Carolina Panthers head coach, Dave Canales, who developed a reputation, at Tampa Bay, for working well with big receivers.
James Pearce Jr was another player who was picked on the back of a trade up. After picking up Jalon Walker at pick 15, widely considered good value for that round, The Atlanta Falcons gave up a 2026 first-round pick to the Rams to get the deal over the line. Although questions have been raised over the value of the deal, with most analysts saying it was too hefty a price, there is little doubting the edge rusher’s abilities.
The Buffalo Bills weren’t in too much desperate need during this year’s draft. The one area they were a little lacking was cornerback. Maxwell Hairston is fast and shows good ball skills. These will help him make an instant impact. While many analysts are saying the Bills didn’t improve their team in April, Hairston could well go on to prove them wrong.
Ashton Gillotte may not become a superstar, especially not in his first year, but he is a very solid choice after two excellent years in college football. He doesn’t really have any outstanding stats or attributes but he is very solid. He defeats blocks and gets up the field, which is a combination that may not earn plaudits but will earn points.
TreVeyon Henderson is another player who won’t single-handedly set the game alight. But, his selection will strengthen the New England Patriots, especially as he will share the load with Rhamondre Stevenson and Antonio Gibson. He specializes in big plays and is an explosive talent who will bag some points and collect some wins for The Patriots.
