Odds Overview

Before we do anything, we need to watch the odds. These numbers can help us better predict what might happen during the big game, especially when paired with the performance history of each team's quarterback and other key players.

Currently, the San Francisco 49ers are favored to win Super Bowl LVIII with a -115 odds compared to the Kansas City Chiefs’ -105. The competition will be fierce, however, because they both have -110 on the spread (+1 for the 49ers and -1 for the Chiefs) and for over-under (over 47.5 for the 49ers and under 47.5 for the Chiefs).

Even if these numbers don’t look good to you, remember that these change as we get closer to the event. Unpredictable things, such as injuries, can greatly affect a team’s potential. It might be worth waiting a day or two to see if any important headlines appear that could get you better odds.

But all smart bettors know it’s not just the odds that make a successful wager. Here are some trends you can use before you lock in your bet.

AFC Teams Have More Super Bowl Wins Since 2012

If we look at the Super Bowl winners since 2012, AFC teams have won six times over the NFC’s four. The Chiefs contributed to that count when they won against the 49ers in 2020, so you can be sure they’ll want a repeat of that feat. If so, they’ll be the second most successful NFL team in the Super Bowl since 2012 - the New England Patriots currently hold the top spot with three wins.

Six of NFC’s Top Seeds Reached The Super Bowl Since 2012

Even though the NFC hasn’t been as successful, they’ve been sending their best teams. Since 2012, these Super Bowl contenders have been the top seeds in the NFC:

  • Seattle Seahawks (NFC West for 2013 and 2014 seasons; won Super Bowl XLVIII)
  • Carolina Panthers (NFC South)
  • Philadelphia Eagles (NFC East for 2017 and 2022 seasons; won Super Bowl LII)
  • San Francisco 49ers (NFC West)

Interestingly enough, Super Bowl-bound 49ers are also the top seed for NFC for the 2023 season. That makes them the seventh NFC top seed to reach the Super Bowl and potentially win it.

Observe the Preseason Odds of Former Winners

Bookkeepers always assign preseason odds for each NFL team. It’s fun to predict who will reach the Super Bowl and eventually win the title, especially when you make the right call and bet on the right team. But as you know, the numbers don’t always show the full picture.

In the 2023 season, the Chiefs started with +600 odds, while the 49ers got +900. Those numbers may sound scary, but take a look at the odds assigned to previous Super Bowl winners:

  • Kansas City Chiefs got +800 for the 2022 season
  • Los Angeles Rams got +1400 for the 2021 season
  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers got +1000 for the 2020 season
  • Kansas City Chiefs got +600 for the 2019 season
  • New England Patriots got +600 for the 2018 season

Don’t let the preseason odds worry you when betting on the Super Bowl LVIII winner. These numbers aren’t meant to be taken as gospel but as a guide to help you decide whether it’s worth the bet.
