Not an awful lot to say about this pick - the ultimate no brainer - a team with nothing at QB, with a new coach, in need of a new direction and the best player in the draft being at a premium position and fitting an enormous need. I am sure that they will still drag it out on the night for maximum drama though!

WR |

The Jets have a huge number of needs - the only positions which seem set at the moment are left tackle and one defensive tackle spot. With a lot of question marks over Fields (and even more over Wilson) there just isn't a QB you feel great about here and I expect them to roll the dice with Darnold one more year - can he be the player he was at the end of the 2019 season or is 2020 who he really is? Perriman didn't really do anything to convince he can be a #1 receiver and Mims is an injury concern so the Jets need a stud receiver who can do for Darnold what Diggs does for Allen in Buffalo

WR |

I am expecting the Dolphins will give Tua a pass on 2020 and hope that they see a big improvement in 2021 - the Phins have a need at receiver and Smith would fit the bill nicely.

QB |
||
Matt Ryan is getting towards the end of a solid (if never quite what was anticipated) career and the Falcons will be feeling pretty good that Fields is available to them to pick at #4. His performance against Clemson has saved Justin from falling any further.

OT |
||
The Bengals have their QB of the future and so need to keep him upright - and the Bengal's bottom 3 ranked offensive line failed to do that in 2020 - Burrow was sacked 32 times (t-2nd most) and to 42 hits (t-5th most) over the first 11 weeks of the season (before suffering a season ending injury) - Sewell is the answer to Joe's prayers.

TE |

The Eagles would have liked one of the top two WR picks but sadly for them both have already been 'swooped' up and so they go with the next best offensive weapon on the board, Kyle Pitts (and Zach Ertz is carrying a $12m cap number)

LB |
||
Following on from the Stafford trade I no longer have the Lions taking a QB to build around as due to the contract they will be stuck with Goff for a year or two at least and so even a developmental prospect like Trey Lance seems too early now - so instead they go with one of the top ranked defensive prospects in the draft.

QB |

The Panthers could go in a lot of directions, they have a lot of holes on the roster, but I can see them wanting to bring in someone to be the face of the franchise post-Cam Newton and get the fan base excited for the future.

The Broncos need help at cornerback and luckily for them the best prospect is still on the board - Surtain can be an upgrade to their secondary and solidify the position for a long time.
#10 |

CB |
||
Back-to -back CB picks as Farley comes off the board - CB is a premium position and we would expect to see a couple every first round - there were not many teams that gave up more passing touchdowns in 2020 than the Cowboys (and their defense as a whole was bad)
#11 |
|
DE |
||
The Giants would love to get Jones some help as their passing offense was one of the worst but they are not going to get value going that route at #11 - instead they take one of the top defensive players on the Board who is great value at this point
#12 |
|
QB |
||
I had been assuming that the Niners would get their next QB via a trade with Detroit but with that option off the table I can see them rolling the dice on one of the most intriguing prospects in this draft
#13 |

CB |
||
The Chargers have got to be feeling pretty good about their offense at this point - their defense however is another story and they need some help on that side.
#14 |
|
DE |
||
The Vikings need help along the line and Rousseau was on the best outside defenders in 2019 (opting out of 2020) - a boom or bust prospect with limited tape - the Vikings will take a punt on his upside at this point in the draft.
#15 |
|
DT |
||
The Patriots are in an unlucky spot at 15 - the QB prospects are long gone as are the top WR prospects - instead they start their rebuild process with Barmore (who could also fit a real need given the number of their defensive linemen heading to free agency.
#16 |
|
WR |
||
The Cardinals continue to build around Murray by bringing in Waddle - a very fast and shifty receiver that can play outside or in the slot

LB |

After a disappointing season the Raiders could go in any number of directions - but here we see them going for a speedy linebacker with good cover skills to help protect one of the worst performing defenses in 2020.
#18 |

LB |
||
The Dolphins are back on the clock - and having gone offense with their first pick they jump to the other side here - taking Zaven Collins as the Phins look to solidify what was an impressive performance by their defense in 2020 - quick, versatile and powerful - he can become a cornerstone as the Phons look to establish themselves as a defensive force

Washington are another team in flux - don't be fooled by their making the playoffs - this is a team that needs to improve in a lot of areas they are just lucky enough to be in the NFC East (which is a long way from its status in the 80s as the power conference of the NFL - there is no QB prospect worth taking here and whilst they may go with a receiver a prospect like Moehrig offers much better value and we expect to see the rangy safety here is name called around this area of the draft
#20 |
|
WR |
||
The Bears continue the run on receivers with Bateman - again this is a team that could go in a lot of directions - even QB if they like the look of Mac Jones or one of the others falls to them, they could also go with an offensive lineman or even a defensive prospect but we have to pick someone and so we go with Bateman, a big receiver that can make an early impact (who will be throwing the ball to him remains to be seen)
#21 |
|
OT |
||
The Colts need a left tackle and Cosmi could prove to be a great fit for them and great value at this spot - they also need a QB but it is hard to see them picking one here (they seem to do well when picking #1 overall and it would have been kind of funny if they had not picked up Rivers last year and tried to Tank for Trevor following on from the Suck for Luck chants!)
#22 |
|
OLB |
||
The Titans need help on the edge and Ossai could be the answer to that need - some might see this as being a bit of a reach but Ossai has the ability to prove those doubters wrong
#23 |
|
CB |
||
The Jets could go in a host of directions but I cannot see them going for two offensive players back to back and so they will turn to improving their defense and in particular their secondary which was one of the worst in 2020 - plus the Jets love to draft defensive backs in the first round - and so they look at Asante Samuel (and we get to hear that name being called again the AFC East)
#24 |
|
RB |
||
Assuming he comes back this seems very likely to be Big Ben's final season - the Steelers could therefore look to draft his replacement or they could look to give him (and his replacement next year) a QB's best friend which is an effective running game.

OT |

The Jags are back on the clock and they use this pick to help protect their new franchise QB - Darrisaw is a strong and aggressive player that can grow alongside Lawrence for the next decade and beyond
#26 |

WR |

The only way the Ravens are going to beat the Chiefs is to score more points than them and so they need to mix things up with their run heavy offense to keep defenses honest - so they look to strengthen their WR corps.

The Saints had an impressive 2020 and both sides of the ball played well - one area of concern though was how many TDs they gave up when the other team was in the RZ (compared to the league average) and so they bring in some secondary help

WR |

I cannot see Rodgers playing anywhere other than Green bay in 2021 and the Packers clearly need to keep Rodgers happy and what QB doesn't like a new toy to throw to.
#30 |

OG |

A great value pick at this point, one of the top offensive line prospects in the draft and you can never have too many good players along the line as the Bills look to solidify their position at the top of the AFC East
#31 |

OT |

Given his performance in 2020 regardless of what happens in the Superbowl I am expecting to see Brady back in 2021 - and so the Bucs need to do everything they can to help him stay healthy and give him time to throw.

LB |

Mahomes getting paid means that sacrifices have to be made elsewhere on the squad and one area where the Chielfs may find themselves having to make difficult decisions is at LB and so Bolton makes good sense here - a dynamic playmaker that can do it all. |
