Super Bowl Champions and the Betting Curse- Should You Bet on Philadelphia Eagles in 2025-26?
It's only been a week or so since the Super Bowl LIX and here you have us talking about the next year's Super Bowl and the upcoming NFL season.
Unfortunately for all of us fans of the gridiron, the National Football League has one of the longest off-seasons in sports. This leaves us with plenty of time to talk about what awaits us in the 2025/26 season, and to reflect on past events in the league.
Philadelphia Eagles have won the SB LIX, managing to win two in recent history making the Dallas Cowboys sweat a little bit. Only a few years ago, the Eagles were the only NFC East team with no Super Bowl wins and now they have two in the last seven years. Now that they have managed to have sustained success, the question that lingers is can they repeat the feat next season.
At the moment we can claim that the Eagles are one of the better run NFL franchises and you wouldn't be able to argue with us. In recent years, they've been drafting well, doing even better in the free agency, nailed the trades, and have developed their guys like no other team. Considering that Philly has the best O-line and D-line in football, it wouldn't be too hard imagining them repeating this year's success in the following season. Also, Super Bowl betting trends suggest that bettors love to wager on the past winners, trusting in their experience in the big game, and the sustained success, or as they call it in the NFL - the window.
So, the Eagles have all the tools to win another Super Bowl, which only leaves us with one question - what if there's an NFL curse tied to Super Bowl winners? Are you a superstitious person? If so, you'd want to read this piece.
Is There a Super Bowl Curse?
Let us be honest here - we're not a superstitious bunch. Even if we were, there is no sustained evidence to prove that there is such a thing as a Super Bowl curse that would prevent the past winner from winning it again. What's even better, recent history proves those who believe in such a curse wrong. You have had the Kansas City Chiefs gearing up for a three-peat, after winning two consecutive Super Bowls. Before them, another dynasty, the New England Patriots did win two in a row. You could argue that there's a curse that doesn't allow a three-peat, and you would be onto something. Also, there is a curse that many NFL fans believe that it's real, and it's the:
The 15-1 Record Curse
Winning in the NFL comes with a price. There was no team in the history of the league that has won 15 regular season games and went on to win the big game. The last team to lose the big game after going 15-1 are this year's Chiefs. Before KC, there were the Minnesota Vikings back in 1998 who finished the season 15-1 and lost the NFC Championship game, despite featuring the likes of Chris Carter and Randy Moss.
After Vikings there were the 2004 Pittsburgh Steelers. This Steelers team was led by the rookie QB, Ben Roethlisberger, who started his career with 13 consecutive wins as the starter. Unfortunately for this great Pittsburgh team they were stopped by the too good New England Patriots.
While these two teams have lost in the championship games, the heartbreak was greater for Carolina Panthers in 2015, because they lost the Super Bowl to Denver Broncos, despite featuring the league's MVP Cam Newton. The Broncos' D was just too good on the day, and Peyton Manning was just barely good enough not to lose them a game.
Before this year's Kansas City Chiefs, we had the same scenario last year with the Detroit Lions who finished the year in 2024 with a 15-2 record but lost in the Divisional Round against the 49ers. So, if you're a superstitious lad, it is not hard to believe that your team will be better off having 16, or even 17 wins, or at least 14. The only team that went through the season undefeated, the 2007 NE Patriots also lost the SB, so maybe going undefeated shouldn't be done either.
While this curse appears to be real, as no team proved it wrong so far, we say that your NFL future bets should cover the Philadelphia Eagles to win another one. While it is hard to go back to the big game, and even harder to win, there were more than a few instances in which the team repeated their SB success.
Teams Who Went Back & Won It
Curses aside, history shows us that while getting to the Super Bowl is hard, it is not impossible to win it two times in a row. No team has won the trophy three times in a row, but for two, there's plenty of examples. With the way the Eagles' have structured their team and their contracts we can see them reach the SB next year too. Here's the list of teams that won two in a row:
- The first team to make history in the NFL to win two in the row were the Green Bay Packers. They have managed to win the Super Bowls I and II, making history in the process. To this day, the Packers are one of the most famous NFL franchises.
- Miami Dolphins have had sustained success in the early days of the NFL. The famous dolphins teams of the 1970s have managed to reach three consecutive Super Bowls. Unfortunately for them they lost in their first appearance in the SB VI. Yet, they've shown resilience and came back and won VII and VII, showing people that it's possible to come back and win it too.
- Another team with sustained NFL success are the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steel City boys have won SBs IX and X and reached the AFC Championship the following year where they lost to Oakland Raiders who went on and won the whole thing. Steelers have also managed to do the repeat once more with the Super Bowls XIII and XIV. With 4 Super Bowls in six seasons, the Steelers were one of the most successful teams of the 70s.
- San Francisco 49ers have won two consecutive titles in SBs XXIII and XXIV, and managed to reach the NFC Championship game the following year only to lose to the eventual champions the New York Giants. While 49ers are one of the most storied franchises in the NFL, one could argue that they have fallen victims to a curse, as they appeared in three Super Bowls since 2013 and lost all three of them.
- The America's Team got that nickname for a reason. During the 90s, Dallas Cowboys were the most dominant team in the NFL. The Boys have won Super Bowls XXVII and XXVIII, and reached the NFC Championship game the next year, where they lost to the San Francisco 49ers. The Cowboys were a dynasty during this stretch and they came back the next year and won the SB XXX, making it three in four years for one of the best stretches in modern NFL history to date.
- The infamous Brady & Belichick dynasty was one of a kind in the league, as they have kept the league in a deadlock for more than two decades. The Patriot's teams of the 2010s were some of the most dominant ever and they showed it by winning Super Bowls XLIX, LI, and LIII. The Patriots have also famously lost the SB LII to the Philadelphia Eagles, which stopped them from three-peat. Interestingly the Eagles have done the same for both the Patriots and the Chiefs.
- There were no three-peats in the NFL, and it would appear that there will not be any until there are the Eagles. Joking aside, the Kansas City Chiefs are shaping up to be a dynasty like no other. Since drafting Patrick Mahomes, KC has made it to five SBs in six seasons. The one year they haven't, the Cincinnati Bengals have gone to the final after the AFC Championship game and lost to the Los Angeles Rams. With a tad bit of luck, they would've been to seven Super Bowls, but this will have to do.
The Biggest Super Bowl Losers
As you can see there's plenty of teams that have managed to win two in a row in this league. While it's always nice to win games, someone has to lose these finals. In the history of the NFL, there were teams that have managed to go back to the big game in consecutive seasons only to lose it again. The ones we're going to single out managed to do it more than once.
The worst of the bunch are the Buffalo Bills, a force dominant enough to reach four consecutive Super Bowls losing in all of them as Bills lost the Super Bowls XXV, XXVI, XXVII, and XXVIII. Right behind them are the Minnesota Vikings with losses in Super Bowls VIII and IX. Last but not least are the Denver Broncos who lost the games in XXI and XXII. Interestingly enough, they missed the playoffs in the 1998/99 season, came back the following year, and lost the SB XXIII.
While there were plenty of wins, and plenty of drama in losses, the off-season is underway, and it's a good time to look forward and not to reflect on the past. Leading by that notion, let us take a look at what the bookies have to say about the Super Bowl winner odds for the 2025/26 season.
Who Will Win The Big Game in 2026?
Yes, we know, it's still early to talk about next year's Super Bowl. There's plenty of time to go around until all teams form their rosters. We have the free agency, the draft, and there come the pre-season injuries. Yet, the odds are already out. So, let's take a look who is favoured to win it all in one year time:
Kansas City Chiefs
With their odds set at +650 at this moment, the Chiefs are still the favorites to dominate the league. There are people who claim that as long Mahomes and Reid are in Kansas, the Chiefs will be the favorites for the big prizes. We tend to agree.
Baltimore Ravens
With a two-time NFL MVP Lamar Jackson leading the line in Baltimore, the Ravens are going to compete. Boasting a good defense year-in and year-out, it is a wonder that the Ravens still haven't found a way to reach the Super Bowl. That's what happens when you share the division with Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes.
Philadelphia Eagles
The Ravens and the Chiefs are joint favorites to win it all with +650 odds, but the Eagles are not too far behind with their odds set at +700. As we said, the eagles have good lines, play old-style ground and football, and that's the style that can give you sustained success. Of course, it all relies on the fact if Saquon Barkley can repeat his historic season, but running behind one of the best O-lines on football should aid in that.
Buffalo Bills
Josh Allen has proved himself this year once again and took home the NFL MVP trophy. One of the best QBs in the game is walking in the boots of Jim Kelly before him. Bills, their fans and their QBs know nothing but heartbreak. Unlike Kelly, Allen still hasn't made it to the big game, but has lost a few AFC Championship games. His nemesis is Patrick Mahomes and with +700 odds, this just might be the year that the Bills step over the Chiefs.
There's plenty to go until the season starts, and we can't wait for September. This era of NFL is filled with some top talent at QB position, and the stands will once again be packed thanks to Mahomes, Jackson, Allen, Burrow, Hurts, Herbert and the likes. But, who will win it all?
