Can the Chiefs Go Undefeated?
The Kansas City Chiefs continued their unbeaten run by defeating the Denver Broncos 16-14 in week 10 of the 2024 NFL season.
With their record currently standing at 9-0, one question is on everyone’s minds - can the Chiefs go undefeated this season? Let’s take a look at what it will take for Patrick Mahomes and his teammates to make history.
After defeating the San Francisco 49ers and the Philadelphia Eagles in the last two Super Bowls, the Chiefs are on a quest for their 3rd straight championship title. And to say they’ve been impressive so far would be an understatement.
Although they had to rely on Leo Chenal’s field goal block to get the win over the Broncos, the Chiefs remained unbeaten after the first 10 weeks, with their run stretching to last season and currently sitting at 15 games.
The team’s perfect 15-game run is the longest winning streak in the league since the Packers went 19-0 in 2010/11. It also serves as a statement of their ambition to win the 3rd straight Super Bowl in February 2025.
Unsurprisingly, sportsbooks see them as the favorite to win it all with their odds currently standing at +400. With the team’s ongoing run, it’s easy to assume fans are mostly betting on the Chiefs to win it all once again.
And finding places to bet online has never been easier with more offshore platforms emerging in the US. For example, if you need a site that allows you to place bets from Arizona, you can easily find a list of the best websites to register at.
The Chiefs were seen as the favorites even before the season started after upgrading their offense in the offseason.
Despite adding Marquise Brown to the roster (who is now out for the season with a sternoclavicular injury), they entered the draft looking for more receiving weapons and got one in Xavier Worthy, who already has 3 receiving and 3 rushing touchdowns this season.
They’ve also acquired DeAndre Hopkins from the Titans and he has since shown that he can play a major role for the Chiefs.
And although it wasn’t easy, they’ve so far proved that they can win in every imaginable way so far this season.
While we don’t have a crystal ball to predict the outcome of the Super Bowl LIX, it’s easy to see why many expect the Chiefs to lift yet another championship trophy.
Before they potentially make the Super Bowl, the Chiefs first have to finish the regular season. But will they be able to do so without recording a single defeat?
The Chiefs fans are hoping the team can repeat the success of the 1972 Miami Dolphins who went undefeated in the regular season and went on to lift the championship trophy. No team has managed to do the same since.
The 2007 New England Patriots got very close after going undefeated in the regular season but their chances at perfection were ruined by the New York Giants who won the Super Bowl XLII 17–14.
With their record now at 9-0, the Kansas City Chiefs have a chance to repeat the Dolphins’ success from 1972. However, their road won’t be easy.
To go undefeated in the regular season, the Chiefs first have to beat the 8-2 Buffalo Bills who they’re facing in Week 11 in the most highly anticipated game of the season.
With +115 odds, the Chiefs are the favorites in the game that’s mostly seen as a playoff preview, or even an AFC Championship preview.
However, getting past Josh Allen and his team isn’t going to be easy, as the Bills have the Chiefs number lately, defeating them in their last three matchups. Experts predict this will be a high-scoring game that could easily go into overtime.
If the Chiefs win and look to continue their unbeaten run, they’ll have to beat the Panthers and the Raiders in the next two weeks. While many predict an easy win for the Chiefs in Carolina, they’ll have a more difficult job against the Raiders. Divisional games are always intriguing and although the Raiders can’t commit to a QB at the moment, the game won’t be easy.
Next, they host the Chargers, who they’ve already beaten 17-10 in week 4 despite being down by 10 points in the second quarter.
In week 15, they travel to Cleveland where they’ll face the Browns who are currently sitting at the bottom of AFC North with a score of 2-7. While they’ve pulled a stunner against the Ravens, it’s difficult to see the Browns doing the same against the reigning champs.
Then it all comes down to weeks 16 and 17 when the Chiefs are facing the Texans and the Steelers, who are both currently leading their divisions.
The Texans are currently 6-4 and the Chiefs' defense might prove to be too much for C.J. Stroud, with his mean weapon, Stefon Diggs, out for the season with a torn ACL.
However, the 7-2 Steelers might prove to be an even bigger obstacle as they’ve shown they don’t give away the ball easily and Russell Wilson having a great season so far. Many believe that if the Chiefs are going to drop a regular-season game this year, it’ll be this one.
The Chiefs then end their regular season in Denver against the Broncos who’ve put up a very good fight in week 10. It’ll be interesting to see how the Chiefs are going to approach this game if the seeding for the AFC, or at least for them, is already set.
With these matchups, going undefeated in the regular season isn’t going to be easy but Mahomes and the Chiefs have shown us that if any team can pull it off, it’s them.
However, another important question is - how hard is the team going to pursue a perfect regular season?
The Chiefs have already proved they’re one of the best or even the very best team in the league. For them, the regular season is just a means to an end.
They’ll likely be more focused on repeating their success from the last two seasons and winning their third consecutive Super Bowl.
We’ve already seen that for the 2007 New England Patriots, the unbeaten run in the regular season was meaningless as the New York Giants were better on Super Bowl day.
Therefore, even if the Chiefs finish the regular season with a blemished record, the spotlight will be on them once the NFL’s most important time of the year comes.
