Gentry Williams from Booker T. Washington High School was rated a 4-star recruit by ESPN and handed a 4-star grade by 247 Sports. Following high school, Williams opted to join Oklahoma after being heavily recruited.In 2022 as a freshman Williams saw action in 9 games and played a total of 60 snaps at cornerback for the Sooners. He recorded just 4 tackles, 2 assists, while adding 2 stops. In coverage Williams notched up no pass breakups, one interception, and an elite QB rating when targetted of 26.4.
As a sophomore in 2023 he played in 10 games and logged 372 snaps for the Sooners. He made 27 tackles, 3 assists, and had 14 stops. In coverage he totaled no pass breakups, 3 interceptions, and QB rating when targetted of 64.7.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- Long and fast and has the ability to dominate receivers as a press corner. Williams has a strong punch that upsets receivers early in the route, and Williams has the straight-line speed to recover downfield if he loses early.
- Plays the ball as if it was thrown for him, showing burst back to the ball as well as good timing for the jump ball.
- Has good cover skills, athleticism and big -play ability to be a lead cornerback if he matures.
- Williams tracks the ball well and does a nice job of getting his head around in plenty of time to avoid flags.
- Instincts are outstanding, and he does an excellent job in route recognition.
- Tracks the ball well and has the natural ball skills for forcing turnovers.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Isn’t overly physical and might struggle to win early against bigger receivers in the NFL. He’s also underpowered in run support, not aggressive enough coming downhill, and too much of a grab-and-drag tackler.
- NFL quarterbacks may take advantage of his aggressiveness in man and zone to eye up short routes and go over the top
- Feet aren’t ideal, as Williams gets sloppy in his backpedal and can be sluggish when transitioning to close on the ball.
